Synopsis

The artistic collaboration on Born in Evin was an extraordinary journey into the depths of memory and trauma. Due to her birth and subsequent imprisonment in the Iranian torture prison Evin, Maryam Zaree was exposed to many traumatic experiences. As both a survivor and a director, the film led her into a dark world – one deeply sealed within her.

“Born in Evin” reflects a cinematic journey into repressed abysses and unbearable experiences. As cinematographer and partner along this path, I was a witness, a companion – and a mirror. Every creative and thematic door that opened during this process led into the unknown – like a tightly locked door that requires immense effort to open, in order to explore the dark spaces behind it. The great success of this film reflects the artistic openness and visual presence that shaped this collaboration.
